INDIANAPOLIS -

Mayor Greg Ballard has vetoed a City-County Council redistricting plan.

Ballard called it "an unnecessary expenditure of taxpayer money."

But the head of the council says they're legally obligated to come up with a redistricting plan this year. Maggie Lewis says it's important to "ensure there is a fair and balanced representation of our community's socioeconomic, racial and age demographics as well as political views."

Ballard signed a redistricting plan in January, which the mayor's office says fulfills the city's obligation to comply with state law.

The redistricting affects who you vote for and who represents you.
