Races canceled at Indiana Downs after complaint

Posted: Updated:
SHELBYVILLE -

A central Indiana horse track has canceled races and training for two days while state officials investigate complaints about the track's racing surface.

The Indiana Horse Racing Commission says the closing of Indiana Downs in Shelbyville on Friday and Saturday is being done in an "abundance of caution" to protect horses and riders. The commission's director says a decision is expected over the weekend about resuming track activities.

Indiana Downs says it disagrees with the complaint from a horse owner's group and believes the track is in exceptional shape. Indiana Downs say it has had a safe racing season at the track next to the Indiana Grand casino about 20 miles southeast of Indianapolis.
