Police in Nigeria say they detained and questioned a federal lawmaker who led a probe into the country's mismanaged gasoline subsidy program that found billions of dollars misspent.
Federal police spokesman Frank Mba said Friday that Rep. Farouk Lawan, a member of the ruling People's Democratic Party, had been detained overnight as part of questioning over allegations he received a $620,000 bribe from an oil company owner who has ties to President Goodluck Jonathan.
Lawan could not be immediately reached for comment Friday. The House of Representatives had scheduled an emergency session Friday to discuss the allegations.
The investigation found $6.7 billion in payments made should be refunded over corruption allegations.
The subsidy probe came after a paralyzing national strike and protest in January over the subsidy being removed.
