SPEEDWAY -
Police are investigating a fatal shooting at the Speedway gas station at the corner of 10th and Lynhurst. It happened around 3:15 a.m. Friday.
Thirty-year-old Tommy Thompson was shot inside a pickup truck and a number of shell casings are on the ground in the parking lot. Thompson was pronounced dead at the scene.
A witness told Eyewitness News that they stopped to get gas when somebody opened fire on her cousin's truck. The driver of the truck, described as the victim's cousin, was not hurt. Police expect him to provide information leading to a suspect.
The witness said they were in separate vehicles when the shooting happened. She said the group had been at Tremors nightclub near Rockville Road and Lynhurst, driven north, and stopped to get gas.
Both 10th and Lynhurst are open to traffic at this hour.
Police say the area has a history of problems since it is located near at least two clubs.
The witness indicated they had no troubles at the club that may have led to this shooting.
Police are looking for a large, older model car, possibly an Oldsmobile '88. It's described as being "jacked up" in the back end of the vehicle. At least one person was riding in the back, along with the driver as the car left the Speedway gas station, heading east on 10th Street.
Later Friday, police released an image of the suspect. He is a black male wearing a black hat, black t-shirt with possible gang insignia, and shorts. He was seen running to the east side of the business. Anyone with information pertaining to this man or the crime is asked to contact the Speedway Police Department at (317) 246-4343 or Crime Stoppers of Central Indiana at (317) 262-8477.
