Old NW Indiana jail getting restaurant, retail revamp

VALPARAISO -

A businessman plans on converting an old county jail in northwestern Indiana into a restaurant and retail building.

A project manager says building owner George Dovellos expects to start about $2 million in renovations this summer at the former Porter County Jail in downtown Valparaiso. The Times of Munster reports a 200-seat Mexican restaurant will occupy much of the building's first floor, with a home decor center using the remaining first-floor space and the upper three floors.

The Valparaiso Redevelopment Commission on Wednesday approved a $200,000 loan to help pay for sidewalk improvements, decorative lighting and other exterior work.

The jail was built in the early 1970s and closed in 2002 after the county opened a new $37 million jail. Dovellos bought the building a decade ago for $320,000.
