INDIANAPOLIS -

The official number of people who are homeless in the state's largest city grew slightly last year, but at least one observer says many others haven't been counted.

The Coalition for Homelessness Intervention and Prevention says Indianapolis had more than 1,600 homeless people during an official count on Jan. 25. That was an increase of 80 people, or about 5 percent, from the 2011 count.

The Coalition reports the number of homeless veterans surged 34 percent, from 262 in 2011 to 351 in January.

However, Charles Haenlein of the Hoosier Veterans Assistance Foundation tells The Indianapolis Star ( his organization believes the number of homeless veterans in Indianapolis is between 400 and 500.
