Gary cuts deputy mayor position to save money

GARY -

Gary Mayor Karen Freeman-Wilson is eliminating the position of deputy mayor in a cost-cutting move.

The Post-Tribune of Merrillville reports Deputy Mayor Delvert Cole had been paid $90,000 a year. He has been named interim director of the Gary Housing Authority, where he will earn about $80,000 a year.

Freeman-Wilson says the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development urged the city to make a change at the Housing Authority. Freeman-Wilson says a search for a permanent GHA director would continue.

She says the city is looking for someone with public housing expertise. The GHA is struggling to fill more than 400 vacant units. Freeman-Wilson says her immediate goal is move the Housing Authority off HUD's troubled agency list.
