Watchdog group sues Indiana over voter rolls

Posted: Updated:
INDIANAPOLIS -

A national public interest group has filed a lawsuit against Indiana election officials accusing the state of failing to maintain clean voter registration lists as required by the National Voter Registration Act.

Washington, D.C.-based Judicial Watch says an analysis of data for the November 2010 general election shows 12 counties had more people listed on rolls than were eligible to vote. The lawsuit lists Scott, Spencer, Crawford, Warrick, Tipton, Franklin, Warren, Union, Orange, Brown, Hancock and Newton counties.

Indiana in 2006 reached an agreement with the Justice Department to purge voter rolls of those who had died or were listed more than once after an investigation found hundreds of thousands of ineligible voters on its lists.

A message seeking comment was left with the Secretary of State's office Monday evening.
