Quarantine lifted on NW Indiana stable after 30 days

Posted: Updated:
INDIANAPOLIS -

The Indiana State Board of Animal Health has lifted a quarantine on 45 horses at a northwest Indiana stable after it was determined the animals are free of a neurological virus that struck another horse.

The agency last month placed the quarantine on a stable in Lake County after a veterinarian determined the sick horse had equine herpesvirus. It causes decreased coordination, weakness in hind limbs, loss of tail tone, lethargy, inability to rise and respiratory problems.

The virus is most commonly spread through horse-to-horse contact and particles in the air. The agency says people working with horses should not share equipment and should wash their hands after handling one horse and before working with another.

The horses were quarantined for 30 days.
