Pence fiscal push lacks social fire that built him

Posted: Updated:
INDIANAPOLIS -

Republican gubernatorial candidate Mike Pence built a national brand as a warrior for social and religious conservative causes, but he's been running recently on economic issues.

Democrats have cried foul and say he is pivoting to the middle in an attempt to avoid an "extreme" record. The Pence campaign says he has chosen to focus on economic issues because that's what Indiana voters are most concerned about.

Former Democratic Rep. Baron Hill said Friday he always viewed his former colleague as a social conservative and thinks Pence is "playing to political whims" by ignoring those issues on the campaign trail. But Pence spokeswoman Christy Denault points out Pence's many efforts to curb federal taxes.

Many voters say they want a candidate who will address both social and fiscal issues.
