COVINGTON -

Hundreds of American flags and signs of support lined the funeral procession route as the body of a Marine who died in Afghanistan was taken to a cemetery near his western Indiana hometown.

Hundreds of people attended the funeral at Covington High School on Sunday for 23-year-old Lance Cpl. Joshua Witsman.

Lawrence Perkins held an American flag as he and his family watched the procession go past their home. He tells the Journal & Courier of Lafayette that the community's response to Witsman's death is touching.

Covington resident Jamie Lopez tells WLFI-TV that she believed it was important to attend the service to show respect for the country's military.

The military says Witsman died May 30 in Afghanistan's Helmand province and that his death is under investigation.
