EPA to mark completion of East Chicago river cleanup

EAST CHICAGO -

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the state of Indiana are marking the completion of a project to remove contaminated sediment from the Grand Calumet River and Roxana Marsh in East Chicago.

The project called for removing more than 200,000 cubic yards of mud contaminated by more than a century of industrial discharges through a joint federal-state initiative, followed by the placement of a cap over the dredged area in the river.

The project was funded through the Great Lakes Legacy Act. The act has resulted in the cleanup of 13 sites in the Great Lakes states and removal of hundreds of thousands of cubic yards of contaminated sediment.

The marsh was once a nationally known shore bird nesting habitat.
