Brad Paisley: his big CMA Memory

Posted: Updated:
NASHVILLE -

The annual CMA Music Fest is a chance for country music fans to create lasting memories by rubbing elbows with their favorite artists - as well as those who may later become their favorites.

These days, Brad Paisley is on many fans' must-see lists. But he remembers the time when he was still an unknown and trying to make an impression.

Paisley says back when the event was still called Fan Fest, he went to try to get attention for his debut single. But it was another song that ended up pushing his career forward. He says he sang "He Didn't Have to Be" on one of the smaller stages and the audience gave him a standing ovation.

Paisley says the reception brought both him and the head of his record label to tears. He also says it was the first time he was convinced he could be a success at country music.

Paisley performed on opening night last week as the festival got started.
