PORTAGE -

A new Indiana law barring smoking in public places is creating a dilemma for a northwestern Indiana American Legion post.

Cmdr. Bruce Thorn tells The Times in Munster that he believes Portage American Legion Post 260 is in a no-win situation as it prepares for the law that takes effect July 1.

The group rents its hall for wedding receptions and other events and currently leaves the smoking policy up to renters. It also hosts bingo events and is the home of a local Boy Scout troop.

Thorn says he's a nonsmoker and would like to see the facility smoke-free, but he's concerned that a ban would cut attendance at the post and reduce revenue.

Post members will vote on the issue Monday.
