Man facing 3 murder counts sends letters

Posted: Updated:

NEW ALBANY, Ind. (AP) - A southern Indiana man charged with killing three women tells a newspaper he'll plead guilty to the crimes and accept the death penalty.

William Clyde Gibson III of New Albany says in a letter to The Courier-Journal of Louisville, Ky., that he's guilty of the slayings. The newspaper revealed the letter Friday.

Chief Floyd County Public Defender J. Patrick Biggs says he intends to "vigorously defend" Gibson. Gibson faces two capital murder counts for allegedly strangling and sexually assaulting Stephanie Kirk and Christine Whitis and a third murder charge in the 2002 stabbing death of Karen Hodella.

Court records show a 1991 test found Gibson had an IQ of 79, or "borderline" intelligence.

Prosecutors say in a court filing they also have received a letter from Gibson.
