NOBLESVILLE -

Firefighters are battling several brush fires along Interstate 69 northeast of Indianapolis.

Noblesville Fire Department Division Chief Rick Russell told the Associated Press numerous brush fires were occurring early Friday afternoon between miles markers 10 and 13 of the freeway.

Indiana State Police report no unusual traffic problems along the interstate, but traffic cameras showed smoke along the highway slowed traffic during the fires.

"We believe that the fires are a result of a large truck that might have had a wheel that was stuck as it traveled down the interstate. There is evidence of debris in the roadway from a tire that was burning. Possibly some of the debris made it to the side ditch and ignited the very dry vegetation," said Division Chief Rick Russell, Noblesville Fire Department.

The fire department reminds residents to use caution around dry vegetation with the area in near-drought conditions.
