Indiana woman accused of gambling away college fund

LAKE COUNTY -

Louisiana authorities say they've located a 73-year-old grandmother wanted in Indiana for allegedly gambling away $100,000 of her grandson's college trust fund, but Indiana authorities apparently don't want to pursue extradition of Edna Sue Pate.

Webster Parish Sheriff Gary Sexton says deputies located Pate at a home in the north Louisiana town of Minden on Wednesday.

But Sexton said Lake County, Ind., authorities declined extradition so she was not arrested.

A probable-cause affidavit filed last month in Griffith, Ind., says Pate allegedly withdrew more than $97,000 in 2004-2007 from a trust fund account opened under the name of her grandson, Christian Patrick Kenneth Smith.

Smith's father, Tom Smith, said Lake County authorities told him they would extradite only from surrounding states because of the expense involved.
