INDIANAPOLIS -
Police say a 4-year-old girl suffered serious head injuries Thursday when she was struck by a truck.
The 4:42 p.m. crash happened at E. 30th Street and Hillside Ave. The driver of box truck told investigators that, as he drove west on 30th Street, he saw a girl running from the southwest corner into the street. The driver tried unsuccessfully to avoid striking the girl.
The girl was transported to Riley Hospital for Children in critical condition. Police did not release her name.
The driver, Marvin Howard, 49, Indianapolis, was not injured. He submitted to a chemical test to check his blood for intoxicants, which police say is standard procedure for drivers involved in crashes with serious bodily injury.
Investigators believe the victim was standing on the coroner of Hillside Avenue with her mother when suddenly she ran across the street, hitting the back and side of the box truck.
The investigation is ongoing, but police do not that speed, texting, or alcohol played a role in this accident.
