Louisville gives junior F Van Treese his release

LOUISVILLE, Ky. -

Forward Stephan Van Treese has been provided his release from the Louisville men's basketball team.

The 6-foot-8 junior from Indianapolis was limited to 20 minutes in three games last season due to an injured left knee.

Coach Rick Pitino said Wednesday Van Treese is a "terrific young man who needs to step on the court and play 30-plus minutes a game."

Van Treese says Pitino told him Monday there wouldn't be much playing time. The forward says "things would have turned out different" if he hadn't got hurt.

Van Treese started 12 games as a sophomore, averaging 2.9 points and 3.5 rebounds a game. He averaged 2.1 points and 2.5 rebounds in 52 career games.

Van Treese says he'll sit down with his parents to consider a new school.

Van Treese played at Lawrence North High School.
