BRAZIL -

Hundreds of volunteers have placed more than 2,000 American flags along the procession route for the funeral of an Indiana National Guard soldier killed during an attack in Afghanistan.

The volunteers worked Sunday afternoon to plant the 3-by-5 feet flags on both sides of the road over the four miles from a church in the western Indiana city of Brazil to the cemetery where 27-year-old Spc. Arronn Fields of Knightsville is to be buried on Tuesday.

Volunteer Jane Douglas tells the Tribune-Star she felt like she needed to help with the flag project even though she didn't know Fields.

Kim Stultz's son was a Marine killed in Afghanistan two years ago. She tells The Brazil Times she was amazed to see the show of support from the community.
