Cummins to reap savings from new water system

Posted: Updated:

COLUMBUS, Ind. (AP) - Engine-maker Cummins Inc. is saving water and money through a new system that has nearly eliminated the need to use hazardous chemicals.

The $28,000 system installed at the company's corporate office building is producing $85,000 in savings. The Republic reports (http://bit.ly/KcAiSd ) another system installed at the fuel systems plant will cost $150,000 and is expected to save that amount each year.

The water system developed by a California company has been popular with companies including Boeing, Microsoft and Yahoo. Its cost advantages have helped it gain traction across the country, including in Indiana.

Water Conservation Technology International President Dan Duke says the new system uses silica to prevent corrosion and the need for harsh chemicals. The system allows water to cycle much more frequently than in traditional systems.
