Fire damages Speedway Catholic church

Posted: Updated:

A fire has damaged a church in the town of Speedway on the west side of Indianapolis.

The fire started sometime after 11:00 a.m. Saturday at St. Christopher Catholic Church on 16th Street about a mile west of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

Firefighters brought the fire under control in about an hour. Witnesses say they didn't see flames but saw a large amount of smoke coming from the sanctuary.

There's no report in injuries. It's not clear whether anyone was inside the church when the fire began. The cause remains under investigation.

The church is celebrating its 75th anniversary this year.
