Massachusetts police officer found in downtown alley dies

INDIANAPOLIS -

A police officer from Massachusetts died after he was found in a downtown alley early Friday.

Sean Cooney, 27, of Worcester, Massachusetts, was found in an alley by the Sylvania Apartments in the 100 block of E. St. Clair Street just after 2 a.m. Friday. Cooney was a part-time police officer and dispatcher with the Rutland Police Department in Massachusetts and was in Indianapolis making arrangements for a close friend who had recently passed away.

Homicide detectives tell Eyewitness News the man appeared to have been struck in the head by an object of some type and lost a great deal of blood. He was taken to Wishard Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

"Officer Cooney was a well-liked and respected member of this department. His passing has been a devastating blow to our community and he will be sadly missed," a spokesperson for the Rutland Police Department wrote in a release.
