Officers helped people escape N. Indiana gunman

VALPARAISO -

A northern Indiana police chief says the quick response of an off-duty officer and an on-duty officer helped prevent a standoff with a gunman from escalating.

Valparaiso Chief Michael Brickner tells The Times of Munster that an off-duty officer was flagged down shortly after 10 a.m. last Friday by an employee of Prudential Executive Group Real Estate. The woman told the officer a man had entered the building and fired a handgun.

Brickner says the two officers went inside and got as many people out as they could. Brickner says the officers then confronted Roy Ferguson. They said he held a gun to a female employee's head and the officers exchanged gunfire with him.

Ferguson held three people hostage before releasing them and then shooting fatally himself.
