15 percent of Indiana listed in moderate drought

SOUTH BEND -

The new U.S. Drought Monitor map shows half of Indiana has abnormally dry conditions and 15 percent of the state is in a moderate drought.

The National Weather Service says rain in the next several days might not provide significant relief.

The map released Thursday shows parts of 11 counties in north-central Indiana and eight counties in the southwest corner are in a moderate drought. Overall, 33 counties in northeastern Indiana and 19 southwestern counties are abnormally dry.

Weather service meteorologist Nick Greenawalt says much of northern Indiana is expecting about an inch of rain through Friday. He says that will bring some immediate relief, but that won't last long unless more rain follows.

He says the next significant rainfall is probably at least a week away.
