Three Indiana schools to receive $4.2-million in grants

Posted: Updated:

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) - Two schools in Gary and another in Indianapolis have been awarded $4.2 million in federal grants to help improve student performance at some of the state's lowest performing schools.

The state Department of Education says the Dr. Bernard C. Watson Academy for Boys in Gary will receive $1.9 million from a Federal Title 1 School Improvement Grant. The 21st Century Charter School in Gary will receive $1.2 million. Fountain Square Academy in Indianapolis will receive $1.1 million.

State Superintendent Tony Bennett says the schools have demonstrated a willingness to work to implement improvement plans. If performance renewal criteria are met, funds will be awarded to the schools over a three-year period.
