Hundreds undergo tuberculosis tests at Indiana school

TERRE HAUTE -

Health workers administered tuberculosis skin tests to about 700 students and staff members at a Terre Haute middle school following a suspected case of the disease.

The voluntary tests were given Tuesday at Woodrow Wilson Middle School and will be checked Thursday for any positive results.

Vigo County Health Department administrator Joni Foulkes tells the Tribune-Star that while up to 1,000 people could have been tested, she thought the turnout was a great response.

Foulkes says the test results will help health officials decide whether more needs to be done to address the situation. Officials aren't saying whether the sick person was a student or employee.

Tuberculosis is a bacterial infection that usually attacks the lungs and is typically passed through sneezing or coughing.
