Near record-breaking heat expected for 2012 Indy 500 - 13 WTHR Indianapolis

Sunday could be a record-breaking day at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

The weather will be a repeat of Saturday's hot temperatures, and we could reach a high of 94. That would break the Indy 500 race record of 92 set on May 31, 1937 and would tie the daily Indianapolis record for May 27th of 94 set in 1911.

Whether you're headed to the track Sunday or in the backyard, keep in mind a heat advisory is in effect until 8:00 pm. It's also a Knozone Action Day, which means there will be high ozone levels. Air quality will be code orange, meaning it could post a danger to sensitive individuals.

Race Day is expected to be dry, but Memorial Day Monday brings the risk of showers and storms from late in the day through early Tuesday. Some storms could be strong to severe, but we could finally get some much-needed rain.

The IMS is warning fans about the heat. There will be plenty of misting stations where fans can cool down, and they're also being urged to seek air-conditioned buildings to cool off if they need to.

TICKETS: Tickets for the 96th Indianapolis 500 remain available Race Morning. Fans wanting to attend the race need to go to the Indianapolis Motor Speedway ticket office at the corner of 16th Street and Georgetown Road or to one of the satellite ticket offices, located outside of Gates 3, 6, 9 and 10. Tickets start at $30 for general admission. All ticket offices will open at 5:33 a.m. and remain open until noon. Fans holding print-at-home tickets will be admitted only at Gates 1, 2, 3, 6, 7, 9 and 10.

PUBLIC GATES OPEN: 5:33 a.m. (local time). All gates open.

STANDS OPEN: All stands and viewing mounds. Gasoline Alley Roof open to suite occupants only.

COOLER REGULATIONS: No coolers larger than 14 inches by 14 inches by 14 inches can be brought into the facility on Race Day. These restrictions also will be observed in the Snake Pit.

VINTAGE CARS ON TRACK: Six Indianapolis 500 winners will turn a ceremonial lap at 11 a.m. in cars that participated in the Indianapolis 500. The drivers and cars: Buddy Lazier, 1912 National (Joe Dawson, winner); Mario Andretti, 1922 Duesenberg (Jimmy Murphy, winner); Bobby Unser, 1933 Ringling & Henning Wonder Bread Spl. (Joe Russo, 17th); Parnelli Jones, 1952 Kuzma (Troy Ruttman, winner); Johnny Rutherford, 1962 Watson-Offy (Rodger Ward, winner); Kenny Brack, 1972 McLaren (Mark Donohue, winner).

MUSEUM HOURS: 6 a.m.-6 p.m. Admission is $5 for adults and $3 for fans 6-15 years old, with children under 6 free. Gate admission to the Indianapolis 500 is not included in Museum admission and must be purchased separately.
