Greenwood man killed in crash with off-duty police officer

INDIANAPOLIS -

Police say a Greenwood man died in a crash with an off-duty police officer on the northwest side of Indianapolis Friday afternoon.

An IMPD spokesman tells Eyewitness News Officer Scott Aurs was traveling east on West 29th Street around 2:30 p.m. when the driver of a white Lincoln, driving north on Harding Street, failed to stop at an intersection and was struck by the officer's Jeep.

The driver of the Lincoln, 78-year-old William Wilkins of Greenwood, was taken to Methodist Hospital, where he later died of injuries sustained in the crash. Wilkins' wife was also taken to the hospital to be treated for what are believed to be non-life-threatening injuries.

Neither Aurs, who had his two-year-old son in the Jeep with him, nor the child were hurt. He consented to a voluntary blood draw, as per procedure in a fatal crash, to test his blood for illegal intoxicants.

"As a part of any investigation involving a fatality, obviously, he was asked to submit to a blood draw where he did voluntarily submit to it," said IMPD Ofc. Kendale Adams.

Aurs' son was picked up by the child's mother.

Investigators at the scene say there is a stop sign posted for drivers on Harding Street, as well as a flashing red and yellow traffic signal that was working at the time of the crash. They say speed played a factor in the crash.

Aurs is a 13-year IMPD veteran. In December 2003, he was struck in the chest by a bullet fired by a suspect following a chase. Aurs returned fire and killed the suspect.

Aurs was charged with drunk driving while off-duty after hitting a car on I-65 near Keystone Avenue in 2004.
