SEYMOUR -
A semi driver, a woman and two children were injured in a crash on I-65 southbound just north of Seymour overnight.
Indiana State Trooper Seth Davidson says a 2002 Jeep was stopped on the emergency strip near the 50 mile marker when the driver pulled out in front of a 2012 Peterbilt semi tractor-trailer.
The semi driver, Markus Riker of Highland Heights, Kentucky, steered hard to the left to avoid a crash but ended up striking the Jeep and forcing it into the guardrail. The semi then struck the guardrail as the trailer overturned. The trailer was hauling Ford diesel engines.
The semi's fuel tank ruptured and spilled diesel fuel along with a large amount of oil that escaped from the load of diesel engines.
The semi driver was taken to the hospital with multiple fractures.
Inside the Jeep, Mildred Okumu of Grand Rapids, MI, 29, and two children, ages nine and five, had minor injuries. They were treated and released.
Okumu told the trooper that the driver of the Jeep fled the scene after the crash. She only knew the driver as "David" and said she'd hired him to drive her and her daughters to Georgia.
The crash caused southbound I-65 to be closed until approximately 5:00 am. The crash remains under investigation and David has not been located. Trooper Davidson was assisted at the scene by other troopers, Seymour PD, Jackson-Washington Township Fire Department, Redding Fire Department, and Indiana Department of Transportation.
