SHELBY COUNTY -
Investigators say that the fire that destroyed the Shelby County Fairgrounds grandstands last weekend was intentionally set.
The 133-year-old structure burned to the ground Friday night and early Saturday morning. Police dispatchers in Shelby County said the fire could be seen a mile and a half from the fairgrounds, and authorities issued warnings about lingering smoke in the air Saturday.
The Indiana State Fire Marshall's Office, the Shelby County Sheriff's Department, and the Shelbyville Fire Department are on the case. They determined that the fire was arson. Investigators said they couldn't release any more information at this time.
Anyone with photographs of the fire (prior to the arrival of the fire department) or information about anything they saw that night is asked to call the Arson Hotline at 1-800-382-4628. This hotline is anonymous and information leading to the arrest of the person(s) responsible for this or any other fires may be eligible for rewards of up to $5000.
You may also call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS or 317-262-TIPS. All callers can remain anonymous. All information can also be submitted here. These tips will be handled by the Shelbyville Fire Department Investigation Team.
