BOONE COUNTY -

A semi fire in the lanes of I-65 northbound in Boone County shut down the interstate for much of the day Wednesday.

Indiana State Police along with Boone County Sheriff's Department responded to the fire at the 149 mile marker.

Police say a 2011 green Peterbilt pulling a 2012 Talbert lowboy trailer loaded with bales of straw was burning in the emergency lane. The driver, Matthew W. Rawlings, 25, of Lebanon, told police he pulled over after seeing smoke coming from the straw bales. He tried to put out the fire but was not successful.

The semi truck was destroyed and the load was a total loss. Firefighters from numerous departments arrived to help extinguish the fire.

I-65 northbound has been closed with traffic being diverted onto US 52 at the 141 mm. Traffic will continue north to State Road 28 and go east to return to the interstate. Traffic is expected to be diverted for several hours.
