Supporters turn out for man charged in chase death

EVANSVILLE -

A judge has allowed an Evansville man to leave jail while he fights murder charges that he caused a fatal crash by driving into the car carrying a group of men who had robbed him at gunpoint.

Forty-year-old Ira Beumer was released from jail on $25,000 bond Tuesday following a Vanderburgh County court hearing attended by dozens of supporters. He had been jailed since a grand jury indicted him Friday for the February crash that killed 22-year-old Antuan Jenkins.

The Evansville Courier & Press reports Beumer's attorney argued that his actions were at worst voluntary manslaughter. A prosecutor says the grand jury heard two days of testimony before deciding on the murder charges.

Family friend Kristi Spalding tells WFIE-TV that Beumer shouldn't be treated like a criminal.
