Tax debt raises worries for old Richmond hospital site

RICHMOND -

Leaders of an eastern Indiana city say they're worried about the future of the community's old hospital site since its owner has fallen behind in property tax payments.

The development group that owns the 60-acre site of the old Reid Hospital in Richmond has missed two tax payments to Wayne County and owes nearly $125,000.

Richmond Mayor Sally Hutton tells the Palladium-Item that the tax debt isn't a good sign for development of the property.

Construction hasn't started yet on what the owners announced in 2010 as a $21 million student housing project. Other plans for the property included a technology park, a hotel and private homes.

Reid Hospital moved in 2008 to a new $318 million hospital complex.
