FISHERS -
Fishers Police are asking parents to be on the lookout for suspicious activity after a woman reported that a man approached her child and attempted to lure her into his car.
It happened around 7:15 pm last Friday (May 18, 2012). Officers were called to the 13000 block of United Drive near 131st Street and Brooks School Road.
The woman told police that a man approached her eight-year-old daughter while she played in the driveway. The man stopped his black Toyota Camry in front of the driveway and the girl's mother saw the man yell at her daughter, attempting to lure her into his car.
Ironically, the woman had seen the man try to lure another child into his car minutes before. She called 911, not knowing the man would drive to her house next.
"But then again, I know all the kids around here. I was, like, 'No, no, you guys move back' or whatever. Then, when I got home, my daughter was right on the sidewalk and he tried to talk her into coming to his vehicle," the mother told the 911 dispatcher.
"What did he say to her? Did she tell you?" the operator asked.
"Just, like, 'Come here'," the mother said.
Ryan Lindsey, 16, hopes someone can identify the man who tried to lure his sister.
"I think it's pretty dumb that somebody's just going to go around and try to take someone's child," he said.
Other parents are in the neighborhood are fearful that, despite their subdivision's Crime Watch signs, others may target their children.
"It's scary," said Lynn Couch, mother of teenage daughters. "You can talk until you are blue in the face, but these sick people out there have a way of still pulling a child in."
Officers searched the area and were unable to locate the suspect or his vehicle.
Channel 13 has learned from other residents the same man hangs out at their subdivision gazebo and even in the neighborhood park. Others say they have seen the man hanging out there talking to children. That's another reason why Couch wants to restart the Crime Watch.
"We did, at one point, have a Crime Watch that was very active," she said.
The police department is encouraging residents to keep a watchful eye on their children and report any suspicious activity immediately.
The man is described as a white male, with a thin build and light skin. He has dirty blonde hair and is in his 30s.
Tips for parents to share with children
If you are lost, stay put, moving around will make it harder to find you.
If you need help, look for an adult with a store name tag or someone in a uniform like a policeman or fireman.
If you feel you're in danger, make a lot of noise by yelling or blowing a whistle.
