A small lake near Bloomington will be drained this summer so that its dam can be repaired.
Officials say the Griffy Lake dam needs cracks to its spillway fixed, along with a gate replaced and removal of vegetation and debris. City of Bloomington Utilities spokesman Jon Callahan tells The Herald-Times that repair work is expected to begin in September after the water level is lowered over the summer.
A federal grant the city received for repairs to the dam and spillway require the work be completed by the end of 2013.
The city parks department also plans to remove more than 20 years of sediment that have built up in the lake, making it difficult for boaters to access the docks and pass under a causeway.
