SHELBYVILLE -
Firefighters are trying to determine what caused a blaze at the Shelby County Fairgrounds overnight.
Callers to Eyewitness News reported that the historic grandstand at the fairgrounds was on fire shortly after midnight. Police dispatchers in Shelby County said the fire could be seen a mile-and-a-half from the fairgrounds.
"The reports are, right now, we heard a couple of explosions in the area, and [the people] looked out the window and we saw it fully involved from one end to the other with flames 75-100 feet into the air," said Shelbyville Fire Chief Tony Logan said early Saturday.
Firefighters were still at the scene Saturday morning investigating the cause of the fire.
Lingering smoke from the fire caused concern, as well, causing city officials in Shelbyville to issue the following statement:
"The City of Shelbyville is experiencing some residual smoke from the fire at the Shelby County Fair Grandstands fire. Persons with breathing problems, health issues, etc., may want to stay indoors until the smoke dissipates in the Shelbyville area, especially west and north west of the fairgrounds."
Reports indicate firefighters had a difficult time transporting water to the scene.
