Professor claims Purdue violated free speech right

Posted: Updated:

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) - A political science professor at a Purdue University regional campus in northwest Indiana has sued school officials and other professors for the treatment he received after he wrote Facebook postings that criticized Muslims.

Maurice Eisenstein says officials at Purdue Calumet in Hammond violated his First Amendment rights of freedom of speech and religion by subjecting him to a disciplinary investigation which eventually yielded mixed results.

The lawsuit filed last week in a Lake County court says Eisenstein was cleared of the allegation that he had violated the school's policy against harassment, but officials found that he had retaliated against two professors who filed the initial complaints.

At issue were posts on his personal Facebook page about Muslims killing Christians in Nigeria and insulting the prophet Mohammed.
