Luther Campbell: former 2 Live Crew frontman cleared to coach football

TALLAHASSEE -

That was then - this is now. That's the crux of a decision that could see Luther Campbell be allowed to coach football in Florida schools.

State administrative law judge Robert Meale is backing Campbell's position - after state education officials refused to certify Campbell to coach.

Campbell had been volunteering as an assistant coach with local approval in Miami. But education officials tried to hold his past as a member of 2 Live Crew against Campbell when it came to landing a permanent gig.

They note his group's songs had raunchy lyrics. They also brought up Campbell's arrest record - and a performance in South Carolina with two women who took off their clothes.  Meale notes most of the charges against Campbell had been dropped - and that he had coached youth and high school kids as a volunteer for years without incident.

It's still up to state Education Commissioner Gerard Robinson whether to take Meale's recommendation. And even if he rejects it, Campbell can appeal.
