LAFAYETTE -
An Indiana pastor may face charges of voyeurism for hiding video cameras in a women's restroom at his church.
The Lafayette Journal Courier reported Monday that 55-year-old Robert Lyzenga, pastor of Sunrise Christian Reformed Church in Lafayette, was booked last week on suspicion of voyeurism. Court documents obtained by the newspaper said Lyzenga allegedly hid video cameras inside fake air freshener boxes inside restroom stall doors.
Police obtained warrants to search the church and Lyzenga's home and he was arrested Thursday. Formal charges have not yet been filed and Lyzenga was released on a $5,000 surety bond.
A church elder, Mark DeYoung, told the newspaper the church council suspended Lyzenga from church activities.
"I'm devastated, distraught, amazed, confused and disappointed in the deepest sense of the word," DeYoung told the Journal Courier. "Pastor Bob was a longtime, trusted, highly regarded man within the congregation. At this point, that is not the case."
The investigation into Lyzenga began in late April, when a member of the church reported a suspicious device in the restroom.
