INDIANAPOLIS -

It's rookie orientation at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. The program allows drivers who are new to the Indy 500 a chance to get up to speed - in this case, over 200 mph - in a step-by-step process on the track.

One of the first drivers on the track Thursday morning was Simon Pagenaud, who drives the 77 car for Sam Schmidt/Hamilton Motorsports. Pagenaud has plenty of road racing experience, but not much on ovals.

Pagenaud inadvertently hit a bird during rookie orientation. The collision caused a significant dent in the screen protecting the radiator. Pagenaud was driving at speeds topping 210 mph when he struck the bird.

Among the other rookies is Bryan Clauson from Noblesville. He's an accomplished USAC driver of sprints and midget cars. Clauson will drive for Sarah Fisher's team this month.

"It's unbelievable, and I still can't put it into words a couple of days later. It's just a great experience and it's something that I'm just trying to take all in and get the opportunity with Sarah Fisher Hartman Racing - everybody who came together to put this program in place," said Clauson.

Jean Alesi, 47, has raced in Formula 1 but never on ovals. He's looking forward to his rookie experience driving for Lotus, which has had some problems this season.
