Columbus hospital testing out new floodgates

COLUMBUS -

A central Indiana hospital that was badly damaged in flooding nearly four years ago is set to test one of its new floodgates.

Columbus Regional Hospital says the test is planned for Friday on one of the 15 newly installed floodgates that are at each of its pedestrian and vehicle entrances.

The gates are part of a $4.7 million project aimed at protecting the hospital from water reaching 2 feet higher than an expected 100-year flood.

The hospital faced $178 million in damage from June 2008 flash flooding of its first floor and basement, which forced its evacuation and closure for five months. That flooding came from a severe storm that hit much of central and southern Indiana.
