Police: Dead man was shooting victim's boyfriend

RICHMOND -

Police say an eastern Indiana restaurateur apparently committed suicide about a week after his pregnant former girlfriend was found shot to death.

Richmond police say family members found 39-year-old Billy Nakis dead of a gunshot wound to the head Tuesday inside his home.

Police say that investigators found a note that said, "I'm sorry."

Captain Jim Branum tells the Palladium-Item that investigators had interviewed Nakis once during their investigation into the April 30 death of 33-year-old Tonawanda Thompson. Police say investigators hadn't identified or eliminated Nakis as a suspect or person of interest in the woman's death.

Thompson was nearly nine months pregnant when she was shot in her car near her home.

Lieutenant Jon Bales says Nakis told police he believed he was the baby's father.
