Fire damages north side restoration business

INDIANAPOLIS -

A fire at a north side painting restoration business caused more than a half-million dollars in damage Tuesday night.

Firefighters arrived at the fire at Solomon Jones Antiques and Interiors 1105 E. 52nd Street around 9:30 p.m. and found heavy smoke and flames showing from the roof. After entering the building to fight the blaze, firefighters retreated to a defensive position. They regained control of the fire in about 10 minutes.

The owners of the business, Marilyn Solomon and her brother, Ben, told firefighters most of the occupants left the building by 6 p.m., but the owner of the painting restoration company where the fire started, Jeff Davis, was at the building until around 9 pm. Investigators found the heaviest amount of fire in the upstairs portion of the restoration company.

It is not clear what started the fire. Total damages are estimated at $500,000, but that estimate could be much higher due to the paintings, antiques and other valuables stored in the business.

No one was reported injured in the fire.
