CARMEL -

Former U.S. Attorney Susan Brooks has won the Republican nomination to replace retiring Rep. Dan Burton in Indiana's 5th District.

Brooks took the stage in Carmel Tuesday night to thank her supporters after taking a call from former 2nd District Republican Congressman David McIntosh.  The race was tight between Brooks and McIntosh all night.

Brooks now has her sights set on the general election in November.

"I recognize from the voters that they need the help of Congress," Brooks said. "They don't need Congress to make their lives worse. They need Congress to make their lives better.  That's why I ran."

Brooks faces Democrat State Representative Scott Reske of Pendleton.  If she wins in the general election in November, Brooks would be the first Republican woman to represent Indiana in 50 years.

The 5th district has been occupied by a Republican for the past three decades.

It was a tight race all night. Brooks led David McIntosh by 839 votes with 99 percent of precincts reporting. Earlier in the evening, McIntosh was leading Brooks by 662 votes. By the time 68 percent of precincts were reporting, Brooks had taken a slim lead.
