Demolition scheduled to begin on Cline Ave. bridge

Posted: Updated:
EAST CHICAGO -

Demolition work is scheduled to begin on a northwest Indiana bridge that was closed three years ago after a state inspection showed the 1.2-mile span had become dangerously weak.

The Post-Tribune of Merrillville reports that crews from Walsh Construction Co. of Crown Point are scheduled to begin tearing down the Cline Avenue Bridge in East Chicago on Tuesday. The elevated bridge over the Indiana Harbor and Ship Canal formerly provided a key link to lakefront casinos and steel mills.

The state is in talks with a private operator to replace the span with a toll bridge. State officials estimated the demolition of the bridge would continue through the end of the year.
