INDIANAPOLIS -

Two people went to the hospital with minor burns from a house fire in the first block of South Spencer Avenue Sunday night.

Twelve-year-old Joshua Martin told firefighters that he was using a gas-powered generator while holding a lit candle in the bathroom of the two story home. Martin believes the candle ignited fumes from the generator.  He told investigators that the room erupted in flames.

Martin suffered minor burns to his face and hands.  His cousin, 26-year-old Brian Simkins, was upstairs when the fire broke out.  Simkins tried putting the fire out with water, but when that failed, he ran back upstairs to retrieve his cell phone and became trapped.

After climbing out a second story window, Simkins fell from the porch roof to the ground, sustaining injuries and pain to his back and legs.  He also sustained minor burns to his hands.

A neighbor called 911 and IFD crews had the fire out in 15 minutes.

Damage is estimated at $30,000.
