Ballot switchers an unlikely factor in Lugar race

Posted: Updated:
INDIANAPOLIS -

Indiana rules that don't require voters to register by party could prompt some Democrats to support embattled Sen. Richard Lugar in Tuesday's primary. But political leaders say it's rare for true party faithful to ask for the other party's ballot.

Lugar is seeking a seventh term against tea party-backed state Treasurer Richard Mourdock. Polls signal Mourdock has an edge, especially with conservative voters. Lugar will need moderate voters who often are independents or Democrats to show up on his behalf.

Indiana law allows voters to request a Republican ballot one election and a Democratic one the next.

Lugar has urged everyone who supports him to vote. Spokesman Andy Fisher tells The Indianapolis Star the campaign is seeking out independent voters who occasionally cast ballots in the Republican primary.
