Emergency pothole repair on I-70 EB in Hancock County

INDIANAPOLIS -

The Indiana Department of Transportation has closed eastbound Interstate 70's right lane and shoulder for half a mile starting at mile marker 94 in Hancock County to allow asphalt crews to make emergency repairs.

The closure is causing significant backups Wednesday.

A large pothole opened up after heavy rains caused the subbase to fail under the paved crossover just east of C.R. 700 West overpass. Under traffic, water pumped into the crossover pavement, creating and expanding the potential road hazard.

Eastbound I-70 traffic will be restricted to one through lane until work can be completed. INDOT anticipates reopening the second lane around 6 p.m.-after repairing the subbase and placing two lifts of asphalt at the crossover location.

Thursday morning, the eastbound I-70 lane will again close. Traffic will be restricted to a single lane from mile marker 94.6 to 97.2 beginning at 6 a.m. A surface lift of asphalt will be placed at the crossover to complete repairs there. Then, construction crews will wedge and level pavement in the eastbound right lane at the east end of the construction zone to improve the transition from existing I-70 pavement to the new pavement.

INDOT anticipates reopening the right lane by 4 p.m.
