Wayne Township school notifies parents of possible TB exposure

Posted: Updated:
INDIANAPOLIS -

The Metropolitan School District of Wayne Township is notifying parents of 46 students at Westlake Elementary of a possible exposure to tuberculosis during a volunteer tutoring program at the school.

The district is also providing information about the situation to parents of the remaining students at the school who were not in direct contact with the potential exposure.

It's believed the exposure occurred between February and April 2012.

While the risk of infection for the students exposed is considered minimal, the school district is working with the Marion County Health Department to complete testing for those students who were in contact with the exposure.

The district has sent a letter from the Marion County Health Department to the parents of the students who may have been exposed. The letter recommends that these students receive TB skin tests to determine if they have been infected with TB. The MCHD has offered to provide those tests free of charge.
